Phase one
What we tried first, and why it barely helped
Like most teams, the retailer’s first instinct was to blame the front end. We spent two weeks compressing images, deferring scripts, and rewriting the theme. Page weight dropped by 40 percent. Real user speed barely moved. The bottleneck was upstream, on the server itself.
- Front-end optimisation only. Helpful, but useless when the server takes three seconds to respond in the first place.
- A bigger plan on the same provider. More RAM did not fix a noisy-neighbour problem on an oversold shared node.
- Cloudflare in front of a slow origin. Cached pages flew, but every checkout still hit the slow backend and stalled.
- Adding more plugins for caching and security. Each one added complexity, none of them addressed the underlying uptime issue.

What actually worked
Once we accepted the problem was infrastructure, the fixes were unglamorous but decisive. The whole point was to remove single points of failure and put the origin somewhere close to actual customers.
- Moved to a regional host with a data centre inside the UAE. Latency to Dubai visitors collapsed and TTFB dropped by roughly 80 percent.
- Locked in a proper .ae presence. We registered the matching UAE domain alongside the .com so the brand had a local identity that matched the local infrastructure.
- Isolated resources. A managed VPS with guaranteed CPU and RAM, not a shared plan where a stranger’s WordPress could eat all the cycles.
- Real backups, tested weekly. Daily off-site snapshots plus a monthly restore drill. A backup you have never restored is not a backup.
- Web application firewall and TLS at the edge. Blocked automated attacks before they touched PHP, and cut the risk of the malware infections that had briefly landed the site on a browser warning list.
- Monitoring with actual alerts. External uptime checks from three cities, plus synthetic checkout journeys every five minutes.
